PAS128 Utility Surveys Underground Survey

PAS128 is a British Standard which seeks to ensure that utility surveys are undertaken with greater accuracy.

There are four types of PAS128 surveys, each serving a specific utility mapping purpose.

What are the different types of PAS128 surveys?

Type D: Desktop Utility Record Search

The initial stage involves gathering existing utility records and information from utility companies, local authorities, and other relevant sources.

The goal is to compile a complete database of known utilities in the area. While it provides valuable information, it may need more accuracy and completeness.

Type C: Site Reconnaissance

A visual inspection of the site is conducted to identify visible surface features and assess the accuracy of existing records.

This on-site survey helps confirm the presence of utilities, assess their condition, and identify potential mismatches between records and actual conditions.

Type B: Detection

This phase involves geophysical methods and equipment to detect and locate underground utilities. Ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic detection, and other techniques are employed to map the horizontal position of utilities.

This step provides a more accurate representation of the utilities’ locations.

Type A: Verification

Type A, which is the most detailed and accurate PAS128 survey type, involves physically exposing and verifying the location and depth of utilities.

It may include excavation or other non-destructive methods to confirm the position and characteristics of buried utilities. Type A surveys are typically performed in areas where precision is paramount.

Each PAS 128 survey type offers varying levels of accuracy and detail. The four survey types allow It further allows engineers, project managers and other construction professionals to choose the most appropriate approach based on the project’s specific requirements.

Accurate utility mapping is essential in minimising the risk of damage during construction and excavation, reducing project delays, and ensuring the safety of workers and the public. Adhering to PAS 128 standards helps standardise the process and promotes consistency and reliability within utility surveying.
